The University of Texas at Austin released this week that it’ll offer a new course exploring the work and impact of the celebrated vocalist and songwriter.
English professor Elizabeth Scala will teach the class, “ The Taylor Swift Songbook, ” to undergraduates in the liberal trades honors program this fall.
Scholars will study Swift’s songs, “ alongside the traditional canon of Western literature Shakespeare, Keats, and Frost, ” the university said in a news release.
The course will address gender and authenticity, while examining the ways in which readers and fans affect how artists and authors work and produce.
cala said she wants to get students supposing about the history of language and how verbal traditions enrich the way we read.
One of the best- selling musicians of all times, Swift is the only womanly solo artist to win the Grammy for Album of the Year three times. She’s known for readers like “ Fearless, ” “ Red, ” and “ Folklore. ”
Part of what makes Swift’s songs a good painting for a literature course, Scala added, is that Swift is such an autobiographical and topical songwriter.
For Scala, the course is also a way to keep learning review alive.
“ I allow
it’s important to connect the class to the present, but I ’m not willing to cede the past, ” she said in the news release. “ This is my way of sneaking the old material back in with applicability. ”
Swift is n’t the only pop star with a devoted Texas university course. A professor at Texas State University newly announced he’ll educate a course on Harry Styles in 2023.
